Consumer Electronics Show Las Vegas - January 9, 2003
Ray Kimber, of KIMBER KABLE, will be demonstrating his new IsoMike recording technology in Alexis Park Room #1512, this is the DiAural Exhibit Room. The playback source will be Direct Stream Digital (DSD) tape at a sampling rate of 2.8224Mhz.
The IsoMike is an acoustic baffle that is placed between two spaced omnidirectional microphones. Unlike previous similar baffles the IsoMike is much larger and is greatly more absorptive, plus the IsoMike has a shape that improves the low frequency isolation by "scattered phase."
KIMBER KABLE has recently purchased 4 of the Tascam DS-D98HR Tape recorders, these recorders capture audio in native SACD format. However, for this CES demonstration the playback will be direct from tape, with the bandwidth exceeding a pressed SACD by 10 db. This is accomplished by enabling a custom setting in the Tascam, rather than the SACD setting.
Recordings were made mostly at Weber State University, Ogden Utah. Featuring WSU Faculty and Students in several different musical settings, both live and session. Microphones used were Neumann M-150, DPA 3259A, Sennheiser MKH-800 and Sennheiser MKH-20. Custom KIMBER KABLE silver microphone cables and KIMBER KABLE Palladian PowerKord Cables.
Playback speakers will be using the very latest version of DiAural crossovers.
The recordings are direct to tape with no mixing, limiting, compression or any other type of mastering or processing. You can be assured of a demonstration that stands out from the usual.

Only two microphones used, no closer than approx 25' from nearest performer. No processing of any kind. More information about this recording process may be found at www.kimber.com then click on the IsoMike tab.
Since there is NO limiting the dynamic range might be a surprise, be VERY cautious the first entire playing so as to not damage amplifiers or speakers. Track #2 is of special concern.
The DSD tape will play only in a Tascam DS-D98HR tape recorder, if you use the internal DSD-A converters you may want to change the filter setting in Menu #D to "custom" instead of "standard", this serves to extend the analog output bandwidth. Super high performance will be obtained by using a high quality DAC, such as EMM Labs, instead of the analog outputs of the tape recorder.
The CD is a copy made from the DSD tape using the down-converted 44.1/16 monitor output on the Tascam tape recorder to a Tascam CD burner. All this material is in absolute RAW form, so there may be some slight R-L balance adjustments needed. Performers are Faculty and Staff of Weber State University, Ogden, Utah. GO WILDCATS!
Note added 1-28-03: The choral tracks are recorded with the singers facing away except for the solo on Rose, the soloist turns around on stocking feet, sings his part, then turns back away.
